I went swimming for the first time in a long time. I vaguely wondered if a person forgets how to swim. I guess it’s like riding a bike, which I also don’t know how to do anymore. I got out my swimsuit & had pretty much this exact conversation in my head:

RORY: Mom, where’s my bathing suit?

LORELAI: Uh…do you have a bathing suit?

RORY: Of course I have a bathing suit.

LORELAI: When was the last time you wore it?

RORY: I don’t remember.

LORELAI: Uh, did it involve a rubber ducky?

RORY: No…I don’t think.

RORY: My suit is fine.

LORELAI: No, sure it is. It’s nice to be able to go from the beach to the mosque without having to change.

I too still have my swimsuit from 6th grade. However, I don’t call it a bathing suit because I’m too cool for that. I guess there is one thing to be said for living in a place where the ski resorts sometimes operate in July…no swimsuits.

I broil most everything. It’s faster than actually waiting for something to cook. Yet, it still uses the oven so I feel good about myself. One year, I had an old fashioned stove in my college apartment. I put the food in the oven, cranked it as high as it would go & nothing happened. I spent twenty minutes trying to make it set on fire. Years later I watched this episode of The Gilmore Girls where Max shows them the broiler.

Lorelai: *gasp* did you know we had that?

Rory: Not a clue!

Max: Oh, come on!

Lorelai: HEY, it’s on fire!

Max: It’s the broiler.

Rory: wow.

Max: what fall out shelter have you two been living in?

Rory: He has much knowledge.

Lorelai: We shall form a cult around him.

Rory: Build a statue many stories high.

Lorelai: We shall grow our hair long and stop bathing.

Ohh that’s what the funny drawer with the fire was for. Now I know.

Stealing thunder

I think my dad was a little bit disappointed when he bought a Jeep. He had been saving up for this manly car for years & I ruined it by saying “Ohhh that’s what Lorelai Gilmore drives.” I didn’t offer to go off roading with him. I didn’t ask just how many vertical feet it could climb without tipping over. Instead, I said “So can I drive around in it & listen to Carol King?” He let me & it was fabulous. Jeeps are noiser than they appear on the show.

All About Eve

Paris makes a reference to Eve Harrington when Rory is supposed to give a Yale tour to that Anna girl. Of course, I looked up who Eve Harrington was, found it was from the classic movie called All About Eve & hunted down the 1950s movie.

I had assumed that I had already watched All About Eve, just because it’s talked about a lot. I had not. I also assumed that I knew the general story line. I did not. I even assumed that Bettie Davis would annoy me with her Bettie Davis eyes. She did not. This film was captivating & it’s hard to captivate me because I’m cynical.

Is Baby Talk Bad for Babies?

Babies have always slightly freaked me out. They are so tiny & helpless & don’t understand sarcasm. There’s just a lot of ways that I could unintentionally emotionally scar them. So I was curious when I watched the episode after Davey was born. Lorelai got in trouble from the Dula for talking baby talk to him. This was especially confusing because Lorelai had said in another episode that kids can learn bathroom as easy as they can say the word potty so there is no use for the word potty. I believe she said that a young Rory had referred to it as the room where legends go to die. This made me wonder is baby talk really bad for babies?

I was expecting to find a wealth of information on the subject. Instead, I finally dug up an article from the New York Times….from 1914. Apparently, in 1914 the general thinking of the day was that grown ups should lead by example so children can learn the proper way to speak.

Personally, I need the buffer with small children. All I really have to talk to them about is how their cheeks are cute & I want to steal their noses. I just can’t imagine that this conversation will help with language acquisition.

Me: So, you’re a baby huh.

Baby: stares

Me: You going to crap your pants now or later?

Gilmore Road Trip Anyone?

I was looking through some archives, wondering why everyone on the show wasn’t awarded an Emmy. I know that they got one for the makeup they did for the The Festival of Living Pictures, & rightly so. I guess they don’t give out Emmy’s for “Hottest Diner Owner” or “Most Dorothy Parker References in Prime Time TV”, but they should, they really should.

I’ve always had a particular fondness for this episode, simply because it’s so pretty to look at. I’m always amazed just how much they look like the paintings. Apparently, there is an actual event in California named “The Pageant of the Masters.” It’s in Laguna Beach, which scares me because I used to watch that precursor to The Hills & promised myself that I would never meet anyone from that show. It’s been going on since 1932 & the ticket prices are quite reasonable. The Pageant of the Masters is 90 minutes long & is takes place during 8 weeks every summer. I want to go…really, really, really bad…a lot. Maybe not this year, but hopefully soon. All I can say is Don’t flinch, don’t flinch.

I’m a bit of an oddity. I’m 26, almost 27, in a state where most people get married when they are like 12. I never thought that I’d have use for this conversation, but today I did.

Lorelai: Oh my God.
Emily: Reading in front of other people is extremely rude, Lorelai.
Lorelai: Shauna Christy shot her husband.
Emily: What?
Lorelai: Shauna Christy, you remember Shauna Christy.
Emily: Yes I remember Shauna Christy, she was a lovely girl.
Lorelai: Well apparently this lovely girl came home to find her husband giving a nice little bonus package to the maid. And they say good help is hard to find.
Emily: That’s just gossip.
Lorelai: Gossip? The man was shot 35 times! He looks like a sprinkler system!
Emily: I can’t believe this. Shauna was always such a nice girl. She was bright, cultured, well-spoken.
Lorelai: And apparently a big Annie Oakley fan.
Emily: This is not funny, the woman committed a crime.
Lorelai: Okay, fine.
Emily: This is a tragedy.
Lorelai: My bad, sorry.
Emily: A man is dead, a young woman ruined.
Lorelai: Consider the subject dropped.
Emily: At least she had a husband to kill.

I was looking through old records, because I am weird that way. Specifically, I was looking at a census from a hundred years ago. This woman’s given name, I kid you not, was Kills Many Men. I burst out laughing. However, I can’t share this information with anyone here because Kills Many Men was married. That’s right, she got married before me. You really have to be sure of yourself to marry someone with a name like that.

The Day the Music Died

It’s sad that I still remember that this is the anniversary of when Gilmore Girls went off the air. I still watch the show whenever it’s on ABC Family. I even watch it when it’s on the Soap Network, although then I think “Why the crap is this on the Soap Network?”

The really sad part is that I have all of the DVDs of the show, but whenever I see it on TV it’s still the best thing on so I tune in. Plus, it’s comforting to know that it’s still around & other people appreciate it. I wonder if two years is soon enough for people to start talking about a movie? START TALKING PEOPLE! No, I don’t have insider information, just hope.

Bee Season

I’ve haven’t read by Myla Goldberg yet. I’ll get there someday. I couldn’t resist watching the 2005 movie adaptation of the novel. Mostly because it had Richard Gere in it. I’m always fascinated that I find him attractive because if you look at him closely, he should not be good looking, but he is. I wasn’t sure how I’d relate to this particular book because I have never been a spelling bee champion. If they would have had some kind of Full House trivia bee, I probably would’ve won that. Recently, spelling has become even less important to me because I have spell check. This movie is like Richard Gere, it should be boring but it’s not. This isn’t one of those movies where things happen or stuff blows up. It’s kind of like being in a trance. Plus, Richard Gere is in it.

I had this conversation the other day:

Other person: What is your favorite animal?

Me: Sebastian.

Other person: No I meant like genre, like leopards or something.

Me: Sebastian is my favorite animal.

Other person: What about when Sebastian dies? He’s like a 100 years old. Then what will your favorite animal be?

Me: Sebastian.

Other person: We’ve been here before.

Me: I recognize that tree.

Well, the last two sentences didn’t happen, but they should have. Sebastian is my dog. He is part basset hound & part really large dog or possibly horse. He is pretty tough, he likes to be outside, he doesn’t seem to really bark at or care about all of the deer that are in the yard. So for a big, tough, 80 lbs. dog he has one very Paul Anka like idiosyncrasy. He is afraid of stairs. One day he got out & my neighbors called to say that he was on their deck & wouldn’t come down. We tried putting him on a leash but he just wouldn’t follow. it basically ended up with an 80 lbs. dog being carried down two flights of stairs. At least I don’t have to wait outside while he eats.
